The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) will shut down Facebook if the government orders them to do so, BTRC Chairman Dr Shahjahan Mahmood said on Tuesday.
Sources at the Ministry of Home Affairs have said the government is prepared to block the social networking site for a few hours every night to help curb terrorism and militant activities.
“If the government gives us this order, we will follow it without delay,” Shahjahan told reporters at a launch ceremony at the Westin Hotel in Dhaka on Tuesday for Bangladesh’s first bamboo telecommunication tower.
“The BTRC has not received any such order yet,” he added.
