Iran has secured significant diplomatic backing from the BRICS bloc, as the collective of emerging economies meeting in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday issued a strong condemnation of recent military, nuclear, and other targeted strikes against the Islamic Republic by Israel and the United States.
In a summit statement, the leaders of the 11-nation grouping declared, “We condemn the military strikes against the Islamic Republic of Iran since 13 June 2025,” though they notably refrained from explicitly naming the United States or Israel. The statement further expressed “serious concern over deliberate attacks on civilian infrastructure and peaceful nuclear facilities,” emphasizing that these strikes “constitute a violation of international law.”
This declaration marks a notable diplomatic triumph for Tehran, which had previously received limited regional or global support following a 12-day bombing campaign by the Israeli military, culminating in US strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities at Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan.
The BRICS gathering is particularly significant as it includes Iran, an arch-foe of Israel, alongside nations like Russia and China, which maintain substantial ties with Tehran. Diplomatic sources indicated that there had been initial disagreements among BRICS diplomats regarding the intensity of language to be used in denouncing Israel’s actions in Iran and Gaza. However, the final statement adopted strengthened language at Tehran’s direct request, signaling a growing alignment among these non-Western powers on critical international security matters.
