Sinner defeats Medvedev to reach first US Open semi-final

On Wednesday, Jannik Sinner, the world’s top-ranked player, advanced to his first US Open semi-final by defeating Daniil Medvedev, the 2021 champion and two-time runner-up. The match was decided in four sets.

Sinner, who was seeking his second major of the season following the Australian Open, emerged victorious with a score of 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4. He will now face Jack Draper, the 25th-ranked player from Britain, in the final.

Sinner, 23, is the sole top-10 player to advance to the semi-finals. In the other last-four match on Friday, Taylor Fritz, rated 12, is scheduled to face her US compatriot Frances Tiafoe, ranked 20.

Italy’s Sinner had defeated Medvedev from a two-set deficit to win the Australian Open title before the Russian avenged his setback in another five-set match at Wimbledon.

“It was very tough, I knew it would be very physical,” according to Sinner.

“It was strange in the first two sets, whoever got the break started to roll.”

Sinner expressed his eagerness to confront Draper.

“We are close friends outside of the court.” He is enjoying an extraordinary tournament and has yet to concede a set.

The Russian committed 15 unforced errors to the Italian’s meager six in the opening set on Wednesday, while Sinner swept through with a pair of breaks.

Nevertheless, Medvedev, who was ranked fifth, reversed the narrative by achieving a double break of his own, thereby tying the quarterfinals.

In a back-and-forth duel, Sinner reciprocated by completing the third set in a mere 30 minutes.

In the sixth game of the fourth set, Medvedev methodically created two break points, both of which were successfully saved.

Sinner was able to seize the initiative with the critical break for 4-3 before securing the victory.

In the contest, Medvedev was compelled to save 10 of the 15 break points he faced, and his aspiration to reach his 10th Slam semi-final was shattered by 57 unforced errors.
