According to official television, Iranian security personnel prevented an assault on the father of Mahsa Amini, a young woman whose death in jail one year ago provoked widespread protests.
According to the official IRNA news agency, Amjad Amini was targeted while his route to his daughter’s burial at the Aichi cemetery in the western town of Saqez.
The day before last was the first anniversary of Mahsa Amini’s passing.
“Security forces arrested several members of a terrorist group who wanted to assassinate Amjad Amini,” the official IRNA news agency said, citing the deputy governor of Kurdistan province, Mehdi Ramezani.
It did not identify those arrested or the “terrorist group” to which they allegedly belonged, saying only that the attempt on Amjad Amini’s life “was foiled”.
After being detained by authorities on September 16 of last year for allegedly violating the Islamic Republic’s severe clothing code for women, Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd, passed away while in detention.
Her passing sparked months-long protests that resulted in hundreds of deaths, including dozens of security officers, in what Tehran referred to as “riots” instigated by hostile nations and media.
After being found guilty of murder or other acts of violence against security officers in connection with protests, seven individuals have been put to death.
