According to customs data released Monday, South Korea’s passenger car export achieved a record quarterly high in the second quarter due to strong demand for environmentally friendly vehicles.
According to Korea Customs Service, passenger automobile shipment increased 46.4 percent year on year to a new high of 16.62 billion US dollars in the April-June quarter.
It increased for the sixth straight quarter since the second quarter of last year, owing to increased demand for ecologically friendly vehicles.
Outbound shipments of environmentally friendly passenger automobiles increased 70.7 percent year on year to a new high of $6.31 billion in the second quarter.
In the referenced quarter, imports of foreign passenger automobiles increased 32.9 percent to a new quarterly high of 4.58 billion dollars.
The number of exported cars increased 33.3 percent year on year to 730,000 in the second quarter, while imported sedans increased 11.9 percent to 90,000.
In the given quarter, the average export price for passenger automobiles grew 9.8 percent to 22,841 dollars per unit, while the average import price for foreign sedans increased 18.8 percent to 51,171 dollars.
