In an effort to reduce political tensions brought on by President Pedro Castillo’s removal from office and subsequent detention, the Peruvian Congress moved on Tuesday to move up the country’s general elections from April 2026 to April 2024.
93 lawmakers voted in favor of the modification in the election timetable, 30 opposed it, and one abstained. Additionally, the law mandated that Dina Boluarte transfer authority to the victor of those elections in July 2024.
Castillo attempted to dissolve Congress so that he could rule by decree; he was removed from office and taken into custody earlier this month.
