A dead Iraqi man was discovered among roughly 30 individuals allegedly carried across the Polish border in a van, German police reported on Friday.
When police discovered the group near the van outside the town of Schoepstal in Saxony on Friday morning, they stated the 32-year-old had been deceased for “many hours.”
The driver, a 48-year-old Turkish man, allegedly fled the scene but was apprehended later.
In recent months, Germany has experienced an increase in illegal migrants arriving from Poland, most of whom are passing through Belarus.
In response to sanctions imposed over a crackdown on the opposition, the EU accuses Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko of flying migrants from the Middle East and Africa to Minsk and then sending them into the bloc on foot.
According to German police, more than 6,100 unlawful migrants have entered Germany through Poland since the beginning of the year.
