Baltimore bridge collapsed

The US city of Baltimore saw a massive bridge collapse following the impact of a highly loaded container ship. There are still many unanswered mysteries, one of which is how the ship lost control.

The container ship Dali, flying the Singapore flag and sailing from Baltimore to Sri Lanka, collided with a concrete pier that supports the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore at around 1:30 am (0530 GMT).

In a matter of seconds, nearly the whole bridge gave way, plunging into icy water approximately 50 feet (15 meters) below, according to officials.

The ship had just moments before sent out a Mayday call alerting everyone to its power outage. This prompted authorities to quickly close the bridge to traffic, possibly sparing lives.

A sophisticated sonar and infrared apparatus, boats, aircraft, and divers are all participating in the search and rescue operation.

Authorities say they are looking for at least six of the eight people who made up the construction crew that was fixing the bridge’s potholes.

Already, two more people have been rescued from the sea. While the other was critically hurt and taken to the hospital, the first one was unharmed. Regarding whether there were still individuals trapped in cars that might have been on the bridge when it fell, there was considerable misunderstanding.

James Wallace, the chief of Baltimore’s fire department, claimed sonar had located cars in the water, but he was unable to provide more information. The inquiry is still ongoing, according to Maryland Governor Wes Moore, but investigators “do not believe” that any persons were trapped in cars, according to state Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld.
