China, US hold first round of maritime consultations in Beijing

China’s foreign ministry reported that China and the US held their first round of marine affairs negotiations on Friday in Beijing.

The foreign ministry said in a statement on Saturday that the two sides had a direct, in-depth, and fruitful discussion about the marine environment, maritime security, and maritime economy.

According to the statement, China raised grave worries over the US’s increasing regional military deployment, its frequent close-in reconnaissance against China, and its support for South China Sea transgressions and provocations by other nations.

It stated that the two parties emphasized the need to improve communication and interaction in order to prevent misinterpretations and errors in judgment.
