Mao Ning, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, stated at a news conference on Friday that the US is the biggest source of nuclear threat in the world and that it needs to reconsider its security strategy.
“The United States is the world’s largest source of nuclear threat. It should carefully rethink its nuclear policy, diligently fulfill its special and primary duty to disarm, thus reducing the role of nuclear weapons in the national security policy, and take meaningful practical steps to ease nuclear risks,” the diplomat said.
Mao also emphasized that the United States was using China’s purported nuclear danger as an excuse to increase the size of its own nuclear arsenal.
China possessed more bases for land-based ICBMs than the US, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal in early February that cited the US Strategic Command. The authors of the article stated that some US lawmakers wanted to boost the nation’s nuclear capability to take on China and Russia.
