Russia: A volcano in the far east has killed several climbers

A group of 12 climbers lost eight of their lives while attempting to ascend the Klyuchevskaya Sopka volcano. After being originally prevented from reaching the group by heavy gusts, rescuers will make a new attempt.

After many climbers plummeted to their deaths over the weekend, search and rescue crews will try again on Monday to locate a party of climbers on the Klyuchevskaya Sopka volcano in Russia’s far east.

According to a local source quoted by Russian news outlets, eight out of a 12-person climbing expedition perished while ascending the volcano.

Six climbers were thought to be stuck and six deaths had previously been confirmed, but rescue efforts had been hampered by severe, subfreezing winds. The volcano is 4,754 meters (15,597 ft) tall.

“Two more died,” said Roman Vasilevsky, Kamchatka territory’s deputy prime minister told Russia’s Interfax news agency. He was informed about this by a guide who was communicating from the volcano via satellite phone.

On Tuesday, the group — which included two guides — started their ascent. According to the authorities, some members of the group died on Saturday after falling from a height of over 4,200 meters. It’s thought that one person has a broken leg.
