Samantha Power, Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), helped kick off the Prosper Africa Build Together Campaign at the Corporate Council on Africa’s U.S.-Africa Business Summit this week.
The campaign is a targeted effort to elevate and energize the United States’ commitment to trade and investment with countries across the African continent under the Biden-Harris Administration, as announced by Special Assistant to the President and National Security Council Senior Director for Africa Dana L. Banks and reinforced by Department of Commerce Secretary Gina M. Raimondo.
The Prosper Africa Build Together Campaign will see USAID join 17 other US government agencies—along with the private sector, African governments, and multilateral organizations—to boost trade and investment in key sectors like clean energy and climate-smart solutions, health, and digital technology. USAID is committed to pushing billions of dollars in investment into Africa and supporting thousands of employment for both African and American employees through the next chapter of the Prosper Africa project.
The United States will achieve these objectives by promoting new opportunities for African and American businesses, investors, and workers; collaborating with African governments and the private sector to improve the business enabling environments and investment climates; modernizing and synchronizing US government services to provide businesses with a coordinated support package, and fostering the conditions that will allow businesses to thrive.
Through the Prosper Africa Build Together Campaign, the United States’ engagement with African countries is shifting away from aid and toward trade and investment. USAID is committed to developing private sector linkages between African countries and the United States, driving investment on a scale that foreign aid alone could never equal, and engaging with people across Africa to realize a common vision for a brighter future.
