Not many profound words have been said in the name of women – living or dead, and most of you will agree with this. In the last 15 days, our nation has had a sort of awakening where most people have picked a side – those who condemn the barbarity executed on woman and society’s victimization of them, and those who don’t.
The viral cases of Unnao in Uttar Pradesh and Kathua in Jammu have jolted the land beneath the feet of many across the world; protests, marches, debates – it has become a national concern and subject of mourning.
Amid all the crying, distress and social banter, there are a few who are really trying to make a difference in the said cases. One such name is Deepika Singh Rajawat.
How often do we see a photograph like this? A confident, professional woman flanked by men who are not lecheroulsy staring at her. pic.twitter.com/x0fSa786bT — Ashwaq Masoodi (@ashwaqM) April 17, 2018

Rajawat is handling the case of an 8-year-old who was raped and killed in Kathua. She is now representing her family in the J&K High Court. Since the beginning of the case, Rajawat has expressed how angry she is with the toxic hate and threats she has received for taking this case. Since the day she landed the case of eight-year-old raped and killed in Kathua, Rajawat has found herself drowning in perils of intimidation.
The man in the blue shirt beside her is Talib Hussain, another advocate who is working on the Kathua rape case since January. He is the one who initially demanded a CBI inquiry. Once the picture went up on social media, people couldn’t stop praising Rajawat for her efforts, courage and sheer will to pursue the case despite death threats.
In the past week, all of us have seen the very elaborate propaganda of fake news that left ill remarks for women and questioned the sanctity of the case. In such a case, in such a world, this picture of Rajawat comes as a fresh reminder of a woman’s power.
This isn’t Rajawat’s first attempt to do right and bring justice to the people who have no money or power. Earlier this year, Rajawat put an accused, a judge, behind the bars for raping his maid. She also runs an NGO – Voice For Rights – that fights for social causes.
