Gabtoli, Bhasantek slum fire incidents gutted 185 shanties

Two distinct fire occurrences in the city’s Shahi Masjid Slum in Gabtoli and BRB Slum at Bhashantek destroyed at least 185 shanties today.

No injuries were reported, and the fire in both slums was contained.

Md. Anwarul Islam, the media officer for the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSDC), told BSS that the fire in Gabtoli started in the Shahi Masjid Slum at around three in the morning and was put out at four thirty after a frenzied hour and fifteen minutes.

The fire gutted 150 shanties, a hotel, a photocopy shop, a mill and one bus were gutted in the fire, duty officer of Fire Control Room Rashed Bin Khalid told the national news agency this afternoon. 

Firefighting teams arrived on the location in four minutes after receiving the information. The fire was put out by eight fire engines from the Tejgaon, Kalyanpur, Mohammadpur, and Mirpur fire stations.

It was not possible to determine the cause of the fire or the amount of the damage right away.

According to Khalid, a terrible fire that started in the BRB Slum in Bhashantek at 11 a.m. today and was completely contained by 12:35 p.m. today destroyed 35 shanties. He stated that a PGP gas cylinder was the source of the incident and that the estimated damage was Tk 30 lakh.
