The Local Government Division has removed AKM Fazlullah from his position as Managing Director (MD) of the Chattogram Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (CWASA) after 15 years, despite numerous allegations of irregularities and corruption against him. Deputy Secretary Abdur Rahman issued a notification on Wednesday regarding his removal and the cancellation of his contractual appointment.
In the same notification, the ministry announced that Mohammad Anwar Pasha, Director of Local Government at the Chattogram Divisional Commissioner’s Office, has been temporarily appointed as the new MD of Chattogram Wasa, in addition to his current duties.
AKM Fazlullah, who retired in 2000 as an executive engineer, was appointed on July 6, 2009, as the chairman of the Chattogram Wasa Board for one year. However, he continued to serve in both positions for the past 15 years across six terms. Locals have accused him of various crimes, including project irregularities and nepotism in recruitment due to his position as MD.
Meanwhile, leaders of the Chattogram division and city committees of the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) have called for an immediate investigation into all the corruption and irregularities committed during Fazlullah’s controversial tenure. They have also demanded that he be brought to justice and that a travel ban be imposed on him.
