Dhaka expresses deep concern over fresh influx of 40,000 Rohingyas

Md. Touhid Hossain, the foreign adviser, voiced grave worry today over the recent over 40,000 Rohingyas who have entered Bangladesh as a result of violence in the neighbouring states of Myanmar.

According to an official press release, he voiced the concern during his first visit from Myanmar Ambassador to Bangladesh, U Kyaw Soe Moe, at the foreign ministry here.

The foreign adviser underlined throughout the discussions the significance of peace and stability in Myanmar and the imperative of a safe and sustainable repatriation procedure for the displaced Rohingya population.

“Regional stability is crucial for both the nations,” he said, calling for increased efforts to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

The foreign adviser also expressed the hope that meaningful discussions would be held to settle the issue between the Myanmar government and important players.

In addition, he expressed concern about the border’s security risks, which include an increase in human trafficking connected to the flood of displaced individuals.

Although the Arakan Army’s violation of the ceasefire in November 2023 has caused a delay in homecoming operations, Ambassador Moe acknowledged the difficulties presented by the continued fighting in Myanmar.

The ambassador expressed the appreciation of his government to Bangladesh for giving Myanmar troops food, lodging, and medical assistance; additionally, Bangladesh helped with their repatriation after the forces had recently crossed into Bangladesh despite the ongoing war in Rakhine.

The foreign adviser emphasised that both countries must give top priority to addressing unresolved bilateral issues. Bangladesh is committed to strengthening regional cooperation with Southeast Asian countries, of which Myanmar is an important gateway.

He asked Myanmar to back Bangladesh’s application to become an ASEAN Sectoral Dialogue Partner.

In addition, the parties talked about boosting bilateral trade, fostering more interpersonal relationships, and starting direct flights between Yangon and Dhaka.

Additionally, they emphasised how crucial it is to complete the coastal shipping deal that the two nations are now negotiating.
