Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of Hamas’ political bureau, was killed, and Politico reports that US officials have stated that Iran is reconsidering striking Israel with multiple weapons.
“The officials said they do anticipate some kind of Iranian response to the Haniyeh killing, but that Tehran seems to have recalibrated and the US does not expect an attack on Israel imminently,” the media outlet writes.
Two senior US officials told Politico that Washington “has in recent days worked through diplomatic channels, bringing in its Middle East allies to lobby Tehran to reconsider moving forward with a military attack on Israel.” Politico quotes the officials to say that “Tehran is increasingly on board with Washington’s thinking, though it initially denied it.”
Following the murder of Hezbollah leader Fuad Shukr in Beirut and the death of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, tensions in the Middle East erupted once more. As they promised retaliation, Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah put the responsibility for the deaths on Israel.
