In the midst of a spike in violence, Israeli troops shot and killed a Palestinian man on Monday in the West Bank city of Hebron, according to the occupied territory’s health ministry.
The ministry reported that Nassim Naif Salman Abu Fouda, 26, passed away as a result of “a bullet wound to the head fired by the occupation (Israeli) soldiers in Hebron this morning.”
According to AFP, the Israeli army is looking into the event.
According to the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, Abu Fouda was murdered after soldiers opened fire on his car in Hebron’s city center.
He is the 35th Palestinian killed in the conflict this month, in the West Bank and east Jerusalem — including militants, civilians and several children — according to an AFP tally based on official sources from both sides.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was due to visit Israel Monday and then the Palestinian territories for meetings with leaders on both sides amid one of the conflict’s deadliest phases in years.
In order to discuss the “serious trends,” CIA Director Williams Burns met with Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas on Sunday in the West Bank, according to the official Palestinian news agency Wafa. For AFP, the US embassy declined to comment.
Israel is in shock following a shooting outside a synagogue in Israeli-occupied east Jerusalem on Friday that left six Israelis, including a toddler, and one Ukrainian citizen dead.
The assault happened the day after Israeli soldiers carried out the worst raid in the West Bank in almost 20 years, killing 10 Palestinians in the Jenin refugee camp.
According to the army, Islamic Jihad operatives were the objective of the attack. Since 1967, Israel has controlled the West Bank.
