The overall number of Covid cases has surpassed 405 million, with the Omicron variant’s rapid spread across the globe, reports UNB.
According to Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total case count mounted to 405,688,274 while the death toll from the virus reached 5,788,456 Friday morning.
The US has recorded 77,437,114 cases so far and 915,349 people have died from the virus in the country, the university data shows.
On Thursday, Russian officials announced roughly 200,000 new confirmed coronavirus cases, a new high fueled by the rapid spread of the Omicron type amid a poor vaccination rate and the lack of major adult restrictions.
Until Thursday, the state coronavirus task force had recorded 197,076 new infections and 701 deaths in the previous 24 hours.
According to Russia’s health ministry, the number of Covid-19 cases has risen to 13,527,845 with 338,091 deaths.
