Chinese police said they had seized a 30-year-old Canadian man called Wu on suspicion of rape, identifying him as Chinese-born pop star Kris Wu, according to official media.
Wu was being investigated after accusations surfaced online that he was “tricking young females into having sex with him,” according to a statement released late Saturday by police in Beijing’s Chaoyang district.
Last month, an 18-year-old Chinese student accused Wu of coercing her and other females, some of whom were under the age of 18, into having intercourse with him.
Last month, the student told Chinese media that Wu had enticed her into having sex when she was 17 by bribing her with alcohol. Wu’s team invited the student to his house for casting in music videos, according to a police statement released last month.
Wu has previously denied the allegations and could not be reached on Sunday.
Wu’s studio did not respond to a request for comment right away. Calls to his law company went unanswered. An emailed request for comment to the Canadian embassy in Beijing was not immediately returned.
It was unclear whether Wu’s arrest had anything to do with the student who made the allegations in July.
