Former Maldivian President Mohammed Nasheed has been injured in an explosion in the capital, Male.
The bomber struck shortly after 8:30 a.m. local time outside his residence.
He was later rescued in a critical condition and admitted to the hospital. Reuters, The Hindu and Business Insider quoted police as saying.
The former Maldivian president is currently serving as speaker of parliament. Police say he is being treated at the hospital.
Local media reported that the explosion took place when Nasheed entered his car. Police have cordoned off the scene. Ordinary people have been asked to avoid the area when moving.
Foreign tourists were also reportedly injured in the blast. Maldives Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid strongly condemned the attack.
In a tweet, Indian Foreign Minister S Jayashankar strongly condemned the attack. He wished Mohammad Nasheed well and said that New Delhi would stand by the Maldives in any situation.
