Trump announces new US warship class named after himself

On Monday, US President Donald Trump revealed that a new class of heavily armed warships will bear his name, an honor typically given to former leaders.

The president stated that the Trump-class ships will be “some of the most lethal surface warfare ships” and “the largest battleship in the history of our country.” Two of the ships will be built initially, but that number might rise significantly.

Alongside Pentagon head Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Navy Secretary John Phelan, Trump made the announcement at his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida. Pictures of the proposed high-tech vessels were displayed nearby.

When asked if the proposed warships are a reaction to Beijing, Washington’s adversary, Trump said, “It’s a counter to everybody, it’s not China.” We have excellent relations with China.

According to him, the ships will be between 30,000 and 40,000 tons in weight and equipped with guns, missiles, and weapons that are still being developed, such lasers and hypersonic missiles.

According to Trump, they will also be able to carry atomic bombs in the form of nuclear-armed sea-launched cruise missiles.

Although the president’s anticipated displacement is slightly less than that of the last American battleships, from the Iowa class, which were withdrawn in the 1990s, the Trump-class ships will be far larger than current US destroyers and cruisers.
