Following Bangkok’s announcement that it was delaying the execution of a peace agreement supported by the United States, Cambodia and Thailand exchanged accusations of new border fighting on Wednesday.
Neth Pheaktra, the minister of information for Cambodia, told AFP that “Thai soldiers opened fire on civilians” in Prey Chan hamlet, Banteay Meanchey Province, injuring at least five people, according to local officials.
Around 4:00 pm (0900 GMT), soldiers heard small weapons fire from the Cambodian side, but “did not return fire,” according to Royal Thai Army deputy spokeswoman Richa Suksuwanon, who told reporters that they thought the event was “a provocation by the Cambodian side.”
