ILO to strengthen decent work, investment climate in Bangladesh

Max Tuñón, the recently recruited Country Director of the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Bangladesh, emphasized today his dedication to collaborating closely with the government and social partners to promote social justice, decent work, and sustainable investment prospects in the nation.

“Our collective efforts will not only provide more decent working conditions for a larger share of the workforce, they will also improve the country’s ability to attract investment,” Tuñón said after submitting his credentials to Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain at the foreign ministry here, said a press release.

The new ILO Country Director stressed the urgency of ensuring inclusive economic growth that creates quality jobs.

“The urgency of the decent work agenda in Bangladesh is evident,” said Tuñón.
“With two million young men and women entering the labour market each year, we must work together to ensure that economic growth is inclusive and generates jobs with dignity.”

The Government of Bangladesh and its tripartite partners have been receiving technical and policy help from the ILO to strengthen the application of labor laws, occupational safety, and workers’ rights, as well as to review and update the Bangladesh Labour Act.

According to a statement from the ILO, the organization also seeks to improve the employability of both men and women by fostering entrepreneurship through an environment that supports business and developing skills relevant to the workforce.

Tuñón promoted a comprehensive labor reform agenda in Qatar while serving as Head of the ILO Office in Doha before being posted to Dhaka.

Prior to this, he was a Technical Specialist in charge of labor inspection, wage, and occupational safety and health programs.

With a wealth of knowledge in labor policy, social protection, and international employment standards, he has also held a variety of positions in ILO offices in Beijing, Bangkok, and New Delhi.

With a broad mandate to advance fundamental principles and rights at work, the ILO’s office in Bangladesh is among the largest in the world.

Additionally, it supports the government’s goal of improving social protection systems and increasing possibilities for good work, especially for disadvantaged and vulnerable groups.

The ILO’s support to Bangladesh is implemented through the Decent Work Country Programmes (DWCP), jointly developed and agreed upon with the government, employers’ organisations, and workers’ representatives to promote fair, safe, and sustainable labour practices.
