Elon Musk says he has created a new US political party

Elon Musk, a former ally of US President Donald Trump, announced on Saturday that he has launched a new political party in the United States, dubbed the “America Party.” The tech billionaire stated that the party’s aim is to challenge what he described as the country’s “one-party system.”

Musk, who was the largest individual political donor to Trump’s 2024 election campaign, has experienced a bitter public falling out with the president. This rift intensified after Musk led the Republican administration’s efforts to slash spending and cut federal jobs as the head of the now-defunct Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

The Space X and Tesla boss has openly clashed with Trump over the president’s massive domestic spending plan, which Musk contended would “bankrupt our country with waste & graft” and explode the US national debt. He had previously vowed to do everything in his power to defeat lawmakers who voted for it.

Now, he has created his own political framework, the “America Party,” through which to try and achieve his goals. “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” Musk posted on X, the social media platform he owns. “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”

Musk referenced a poll he conducted on X on Friday, US Independence Day, asking respondents if they “want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system” that has dominated US politics for some two centuries. The yes-or-no survey garnered more than 1.2 million responses, with over 65% voting in favor of a new party.

“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!” he posted on Saturday. Musk also shared a meme depicting a two-headed snake with the caption “End the Uniparty,” symbolizing his push for an alternative to the traditional Democratic and Republican dominance in US politics.

While Musk is ineligible to run for president himself due to not being a “natural-born citizen” (he was born in South Africa), he has hinted at the party’s immediate strategy. He suggested the America Party would “laser-focus on just 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts” in the upcoming midterm elections. Given the razor-thin legislative margins in Congress, he believes this could be enough to serve as the “deciding vote on contentious laws, ensuring they serve the true will of the people.”

The precise platform details of the America Party are yet to be fully outlined, but Musk has indicated a focus on fiscal conservatism, reducing debt, modernizing the military with AI and robotics, less regulation, free speech, and pro-natalist policies, with “centrist policies everywhere else.” The announcement marks a significant and unexpected development in the US political landscape, reflecting Musk’s growing frustration with the established parties and his ambition to exert direct political influence.
