Bangladesh expedites efforts with UK to recover stolen assets: Alam

London, UK – Bangladesh has significantly accelerated its initiatives with British authorities to recover stolen national assets, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam announced in London on Wednesday. Emphasizing the inherently challenging and time-consuming nature of asset recovery, Alam stated that the interim government is prioritizing these efforts.

During a press briefing, Alam confirmed that Dr. Mohammad Abdul Momen, Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), and Dr. Ahsan H Mansur, Governor of Bangladesh Bank, are accompanying Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on his current London tour to directly engage on this issue.

The ACC chief and the central bank governor jointly held a crucial meeting with the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) specifically concerning asset recovery. Alam highlighted the NCA’s proven expertise in tracing the complex trails of laundered assets and securing their attachment, noting that the agency has already initiated “two moves” in this regard. Beyond direct engagement, Bangladeshi officials are also conducting meetings to learn from the successful experiences of other nations in recovering illicitly acquired funds.

Chief Adviser Professor Yunus personally raised the critical issue of asset repatriation during a separate meeting with UK National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell.

Beyond financial recovery, discussions during the Chief Adviser’s meeting with Powell also encompassed the pressing Rohingya crisis, Bangladesh’s active role in consensus-building efforts, and broader strategies for regional peace and stability across South Asia.
