Bangladesh will set a new record for mango production and exports

With almost 2,05,034 hectares of land being put under mango cultivation with a record output target of 27 lakh metric tons, Bangladesh is expected to have a bumper production and export of the delectable summer fruit mango this season.

This season, the concerned officials anticipate exporting about 5,000 metric tons of mangos overseas.

This is the first time that Bangladesh will export mangoes to China. Bangladesh exports mangoes annually to over 38 nations, including the UK, Italy, France, and Canada. In this respect, the two nations have previously signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Speaking to BSS, Arifur Rahman, project head of the exportable mango production project, expressed optimism that, with favorable weather and conditions, the nation will produce a big crop of mangoes this time around.


Additionally, he mentioned that this time, 5,000 metric tons of mango exports are the goal.

He stated that although a Memorandum of Understanding has already been signed between the two nations, in order to export food commodities to China, registration from the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China (GACC) is required.

He said that GACC provided registration to Bangladesh for exporting mango in last July while various issues are being scrutinized at different levels for exporting mango to China.

Arifur hoped that if everything goes well, then exporting mango to China would begin from June this year which would open up a new avenue of potentials.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Bangladesh witnessed a production of 23,50,499 metric tons of mango through bringing some 2,02,968 hectares of land in FY21 while the production rose to 27,07,459 metric tons in   FY23.

However, in the last fiscal year (FY24), the production of mango totalled 25,08,973 metric tons through bringing some 2,05,034 hectares of land under cultivation.

Considering the export statistics of mango, it was found that some 309 metric tons of mango were exported in FY17 which jumped to 1,757 metric tons in FY22.


In continuation of this, mango production increased to 3,100 metric tons in FY23 which have, however, declined to 1,321 metric tons in the following FY24.

Mango grows widely all over Bangladesh and it is called the king of fruits here. Each variety has its own admirers. Some better mango is the superior grafted varieties whereas local or Deshi mango is also grown from seedlings.

Fazlee, Langra, Gopalbhogh, Himsagar, Khirsapat, Amrapali, Mollika, Subornarekha, Misridana, Nilambori, Kalibhogh, Kanchamitha, Alfanso, Baromasi, Totapuri, Karabau, Keo Sao, Gopal Khas, Kent, Surjopuree, Pahutan, Trifola, Haribhanga, Chatapora, Guthli, Lokhna, Adaira, Kolaboti, and Rupali are some of the exotic names for the better mango varieties, according to the DAE. Additionally, there are numerous improved BARI mango types available.

Mangoes are primarily grown in 15 districts across the nation, including Rajshahi, Naogaon, Satkhira, and Chapainawabganj, according to Sazzad Hossain Mozumder, extra deputy director of the exportable mango production project, who spoke to BSS.

He said that the Gopalbhogh type of Satkhira would begin harvesting mangoes this season on May 5.

With its mouthwatering and delectable mangoes shipped to nations like India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, France, Sweden, and Canada, Bangladesh presently ranks seventh in the world for mango output.

Mexico is the largest exporter of mangoes, with 4,21,636 metric tons exported year, followed by Thailand, Brazil, Peru, the Netherlands, India, Pakistan, Vietnam, Spain, and Ecuador.
