On April 17, 2025, Sweden announced a significant increase in its humanitarian aid to Bangladesh, allocating $12.7 million (approximately BDT 155.4 crore) to support over one million Rohingya refugees and the host communities in Cox’s Bazar. This funding aims to address critical needs in food security, healthcare, education, and emergency response services.
The Swedish Embassy in Dhaka stated that the assistance would be channeled through eight partner organizations, including UNHCR, WFP, Norwegian Refugee Council, Islamic Relief, Action Against Hunger, Save the Children, and International Rescue Committee. The funds will facilitate the provision of food assistance, nutrition, protection services, gender-based violence support, child protection, healthcare, emergency education, and access to water and sanitation.
Ambassador Nicolas Weeks emphasized Sweden’s long-standing commitment to supporting Bangladesh in addressing humanitarian challenges, noting, “Sweden stands firmly with Bangladesh in responding to humanitarian needs in the country, including those of Rohingya refugees, just as we have for the past seven years.” He further highlighted the increased allocation this year due to growing humanitarian needs, particularly in the world’s largest refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar.
In addition to supporting international organizations, Sweden is partnering with Start Fund Bangladesh to assist 26 local and national organizations in enhancing their emergency response capabilities. This collaboration aims to strengthen the capacity of local NGOs to address acute food insecurity and other urgent needs within the communities.
Sweden continues to be one of the world’s largest humanitarian donors, providing substantial core support to UNHCR, WFP, UNICEF, UNFPA, and the UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF).
