According to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, New Delhi has always given its relationship with Dhaka “highest priority” and does not back any specific party in Bangladesh.
On the fringes of the BIMSTEC summit in Bangkok, he made the statement during a bilateral meeting with Professor Muhammad Yunus, the chief adviser for Bangladesh.
According to Modi, the two neighbors’ histories are closely intertwined and date back to Bangladesh’s founding.
He declared that India would always back a democratic, inclusive, and forward-thinking Bangladesh.
Claiming that India does not support any particular party in Bangladesh, Modi said: “Our relationship is people-to-people.” According to him, India’s attachment is to the nation and not to any particular people or political groups. The Indian prime remembers Prof. Yunus’s international prominence.
The Indian prime minister blamed social media for the tensions surrounding the remarks made by Sheikh Hasina, the ousted prime leader, while she was in India.
He made reference to the border killings, stating that the deaths took place in Indian territory and that Indian border troops only opened fire in self-defense.
In order to stop killings along the border between Bangladesh and India, the two leaders emphasized the importance of cooperation. Narendra Modi congratulated Prof Yunus on his assumption of the BIMSTEC chairmanship, and greeted him on the occasion of Eid ul-Fitr. During their 40-minute candid meeting, the both leaders greeted each other with mutual respect and a shared openness for dialogue. They expressed their best wishes for sustained peace, development, and prosperity for the citizens of both nations as they wrapped up their frank and productive discussion by wishing one another health and personal well-being.
Among those in attendance were Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Bangladesh Foreign Advisor Md. Tauhid Hossain, Chief Advisor’s High Representative Dr. Khalilur Rahman, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.
