UN General Assembly adopts resolution on Rohingya crisis

The resolution on the scope, modalities, format, and organization of the high-level conference on the situation of Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar, which is being sponsored by Malaysia and Finland, was accepted by the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.

During the open debate session, Ambassador Md. Salahuddin Noman Choudhury, the Permanent Representative of Bangladesh, intervened and suggested a vote on this resolution because Russia had put out a number of modifications that Bangladesh rejected.

According to a report received here today, the resolution was approved with 141 votes in favor when the President of the General Assembly called the vote.

The resolution was not opposed by a vote. But ten nations did not cast ballots.

Given that Dhaka is preparing to host a special conference on the Rohingya crisis in New York in September, the acceptance of this resolution marks a critical turning point in the future resolution of the Rohingya issue.
