During Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus’s next trip to China, a number of agreements and Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) are anticipated to be inked. In addition to economic cooperation, talks are anticipated to address military cooperation and the Teesta issue.
“A number of MoUs are likely to be signed during the visit,” Foreign Secretary Md. Jashim Uddin said today at a curtain-raiser media briefing at the foreign ministry here, where he outlined the Chief Adviser’s forthcoming visits to China and Thailand.
Economic and technical support, human resource development assistance, disaster mitigation cooperation, the creation of a Chinese book center, the translation and publication of classical Chinese literature, cooperation in the sports industry, and cooperation between the two nations’ state news agencies are all included in the Memorandums of Understanding.
In response to a query, the foreign secretary stated, “There will be talks about military cooperation with China. China sees us as a vital friend, and we see the same in return.He added that the Teesta issue might be brought up under the river management framework, but that Dr. Yunus’s bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping would not be agenda-driven.
Regarding the Rohingya crisis, the foreign secretary said Bangladesh would seek China’s perspective on Myanmar during the visit.
In response to another query, Jashim Uddin highlighted increased cooperation with China in the health sector.
“Four specialized hospitals have been set up in Kunming for Bangladeshis. China also plans to establish a specialized hospital in Bangladesh,” he added.
Tomorrow, March 26, Chief Adviser Professor Yunus is departing for China to attend the Boao Forum for Asia Conference in Hainan Province.
He is scheduled to speak at the opening plenary session of the conference on March 27 and could meet with Ding Xuexiang, the Executive Vice Premier of China.
The Chief Adviser and President Xi Jinping are scheduled to meet at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People on March 28. The two nations will sign the Memorandums of Understanding following the bilateral meeting.
He is also expected to interview with a major Chinese media outlet and tour a high-tech company owned by Huawei.
Peking University will confer an honorary doctorate on Dr. Yunus on March 29, where he will also deliver a speech.
The chief adviser is expected to return home the same day.
