SA keen to enhance trade tie alongside humanitarian cooperation: envoy

Essa Yousef Essa Alduhailan, the Saudi ambassador to Bangladesh, stated today that the kingdom is keen to expand its trade, business, tourism, and people-to-people interactions with Bangladesh in addition to its continued humanitarian assistance.

Speaking at the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, the envoy announced the arrival of 100 tons of dates as a gift from the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques.

The ambassador formally gave the dates to representatives from the Foreign and Disaster Management and Relief Ministries during a ceremony this afternoon at the Saudi Embassy.

The dates will be distributed among the poorest, vulnerable communities and flood-affected people across the country, the envoy said.

Officials from the ministries said 70 tonnes of dates have already been received and are being preserved for distribution, which is expected to take place before the Holy Month of Ramadan.
The Saudi Ambassador also expressed optimism about resolving the long-standing passport issues of 69,000 individuals who traveled to Saudi Arabia with Bangladeshi passports following Bangladesh’s independence.

“We hope this issue will be resolved soon,” he said, referring to ongoing positive discussions between Bangladesh and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Since attempts are being made to regularize their legal status, the envoy promised that these persons will not be sent to Bangladesh.

In the last three years, the Saudi Embassy has issued more than 2.2 million work visas, the envoy said, underscoring the Kingdom’s dedication to providing employment opportunities for Bangladeshi workers.
