Trump ‘not 100% sure’ he’s barred from third term

US President Donald Trump has again alluded to the possibility of a third term, stating that he was “not 100 percent sure” that the Constitution prohibited him from doing so.

Trump has frequently hinted that he would serve more than the two terms currently allowed for US presidents, but even while he usually does it in a humorous manner, his comments are nonetheless controversial.

“I’ve raised a lot of money for the next race that I assume I can’t use for myself, but I’m not 100 percent sure, because I don’t know… I think I’m not allowed to run again,” Trump told an audience of Congressional Republicans in Miami.

“I’m not sure, am I allowed to run again?” Trump said, turning to Republican House Leader Mike Johnson, to laughs. Mike? I’d better keep you out of that dispute.”

A week ago, Trump was sworn in for his second term as president, making him only the second person in US history to hold the office for two non-consecutive terms.

The Constitution’s 22nd Amendment, which was enacted in 1951 in part as a reaction to Franklin D. Roosevelt’s historic four terms as president from 1933 to 1945, limits US presidents to two terms in office.

Last week, a Republican in the US House proposed a very unlikely proposal to amend the constitution to grant Trump another term.

Trump has alluded to extending his stay on a number of occasions and joked about it as recently Saturday, during a rally in Nevada.

“It will be the greatest honor my life to serve not once, but twice — or three times or four times,” he said with a laugh, before adding to cheers from the audience: “Headlines for the fake news.”

Trump stated in a subsequent speech to House Republicans in November, just after winning the election, “I suspect I won’t be running again unless you say, ‘He’s good, we got to figure something else.'”

In July, Trump told a group of conservative Christians, “Christians, go vote. Only this once… You won’t have to vote any more after four more years, and everything will be fixed.
