UN to investigate crimes by any group in Myanmar: IIMM

The Arakan Army, a rebel organization that controls 80% of Rakhine state, is one of the groups accused of abusing Rohingyas, and the UN Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM) will look into these claims.

Today, Nicholas Koumjian, the head of IIMM, stated, “We have the mandate to investigate abuses committed by any group or force in Myanmar, whether it’s the Arakan Army, the Myanmar military, or any other entity.”

After meeting with Foreign Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain at the foreign ministry here, he gave remarks to reporters.

“If Rohingyas or anyone else are victims of abuse, we will investigate. We are collecting evidence for this purpose,” he added in response to a question.

When asked how investigations would proceed without access to Myanmar, Koumjian explained that evidence is being collected through modern technology, social media, and interviews with victims, despite the lack of physical access to the country.

He emphasized that the UN mechanism is still dedicated to guaranteeing justice and accountability for international crimes against the Rohingyas in Myanmar.

He admitted that the situation in Myanmar has worsened and thanked the government of Bangladesh for their assistance.

He stated that attempts to obtain proof of abuses are still ongoing in spite of these obstacles.

The foreign ministry later stated in a news statement that the foreign adviser valued the IIMM’s continued work to guarantee justice and responsibility for the victims of major international crimes in Myanmar during the meeting.

The counsel claimed that although Bangladesh has been providing the Rohingyas with tremendous hospitality, the international community has not been able to put pressure on Myanmar to allow their return.

They talked about the latest events in Rakhine State as well.

The head of IIMM, an accountability player, expressed the mechanism’s desire to contribute positively to the next UN High-Level Conference on the Situation of Rohingya Muslims and Other Minorities in Myanmar.
