At a hearing on the bail plea of detained Sanatani Jagoron Manch leader Chinmoy Krinsa Das on November 26 of last year, a Chattogram court today granted bail to sixty-three attorneys who were charged in a case involving altercations and vandalism on the court grounds.
Among the attorneys, Subashis Sarma and Chandan Kumer Talukder, two of Chinmoy Krishna Das’s defendant attorneys, were also granted bail today.
Chinmoy, a former ISKON leader, was previously taken into custody by police on suspicion of defaming the national flag.
Advocate Mofizul Haque Bhuyian, Public Prosecutor of Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court, reported that Chattogram Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Sarker Hasan Shahriar granted their bail plea after the attorneys turned themselves up before the court. The PP advocate Haque said the court granted bail to 63 out of the 66 accused lawyers on a bond of Tk 1,000 each. “The court heard both the sides during the hearing on the bail petition. We argue before the court that the killing of advocate Alif is a tragic incident and those responsible for the killing must be punished but the lawyers accused in the case on charges of clash and vandalism were not involved in that incident, even their names were not mentioned in the murder case” the defendant lawyer Sarvajit Chowdhury told BSS. Stringent security measures were taken in and around the court premises before and after the hearing that lasted for an hour from 11.30 am However, a group of lawyers opposed the bail of the accused lawyers saying supporters of Chinmoy were dare to stage rowdy demonstration and later they murdered advocate Alif brutally following the provocation and instigation of the accused lawyers. Md. Shamsul Alam, the plaintiff’s attorney and member secretary of Ainjibi Oikko Parishad, expressed displeasure to BSS, saying that the attorneys who were granted bail today were the primary mentors of a string of violent occurrences that occurred on November 26 of last year.
According to him, a lower court cannot grant bail to someone who has been charged under the Explosive Act.
In order to expedite their trial and guarantee the worst punishment possible, Advocate Alam also called for the arrest of all of the perpetrators responsible for the horrific murder of young attorney Alif.
