Roof gardening is vital for producing safe food: Rizwana

Roof gardening is an important way to produce safe, toxic-free food and fresh air, according to Environment, Forests, and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan today.

“The people will be benefitted if all the city’s roofs are transformed into gardens… It will reduce carbon emissions, control temperature, and improve the quality of air to a great extent,” the adviser told a seminar titled “Importance of Roof Gardening in Eliminating Global Warming” which was held at the Jatiya Press Club (JPC) here.

Rizwana said, “Everyone can play a key role in protecting the environment if they take the initiative of setting up a roof garden on their respective roofs.

“The roof gardening also helps safeguard mental health and ensure food security along with maintaining the ecological balance of the environment,” she added.

She stated that “it is a wrong concept rather, roof gardening is an effective solution to fight against global warming.” She also mentioned that people are hesitant to create roof gardens because they are afraid of their roofs collapsing.

The government has implemented a number of programs to increase rooftop gardening and raise public awareness of the benefits of rooftop gardening.

The program was chaired by Motaleb Mashreki, President of Dhakar Shikor, an online service and social organization that aims to expand roof farming. Other speakers included Golam Haider, a veteran of the Roof Gardening Movement, Krishibid Dr. Mehedi Masud, and Mostafa Kamal Mojumder, secretary of Greenwatch.

The adviser then gave the roof gardeners awards and saplings. Additionally, the advisor planted a tree on the JPC grounds.
