Morocco sees tourism spike in 2024 with 17 million visitors: ministry

Morocco broke its annual arrivals record last year, welcoming almost 17 million tourists, a 20 percent rise from 2023, officials said Thursday.

In an effort to grow its tourism economy, the North African country has made significant investments in modernizing its airports, public transportation, and hospitality sector in recent years.

According to a statement from the tourism ministry, which was reported by the official news agency MAP, there were roughly three million more tourists in 2024 than the year before.

According to the statement, just over half of the visitors were foreigners, and the remaining Moroccans were expatriates, both of which were more than in 2023.

“These figures reflect our government’s targeted investments in this vital economic sector and the unwavering efforts of tourism professionals,” Tourism Minister Fatim-Zahra Ammor said.

Approximately 827,000 people are directly employed in the tourism industry, which presently contributes about 7% of Morocco’s GDP, the government told AFP.

According to the ministry, revenues at the end of November were over $10 billion, a 7% rise over the same period in 2023.

Morocco has increased air routes, partnered with low-cost carriers like Ireland’s Ryanair, and made investments in hotels and commercial services in recent years.

According to the government, there are now 705 foreign aviation routes, up from 120 last year. Later this year, Morocco will host the African Cup of Nations for football, and in 2030, it will host the World Cup.
