According to a public survey called “Kemon Police Chai” (what sort of police we want), the majority of respondents support the creation of a commission or independent regulatory body for police in order to hold the law enforcement agency accountable and independent.
“Around 58.9% of the respondents gave their opinion in favor of a regulatory body or commission to keep the police accountable and free from various influences,” said the survey conducted by the Police Reform Commission (PRC).
About 24,422 persons participated in the survey, and 41.1 percent (10044) of them expressed an opinion regarding the creation of an independent “Police Ombudsman” within the constitutional framework.
According to the PRC, before weighing the two options—the creation of a police commission or a police ombudsman—an opinion can be formed by taking into account the creation of a police commission, what its authority and jurisdiction will be, and how it can be carried out. It can also be formed by looking at the experience of creating similar commissions in other nations.
According to the PRC’s special examination, the questionnaire’s personal opinion questions could not be systematically examined.
“Most of the respondents did not answer in accordance with the questions. Moreover, it is time-consuming to change the format to record the diverse statements of such a large number of respondents and compile the information,” the PRC opined in the study.
However, the issues can be discussed in a double-choice manner at the commission meeting, the PRC said.
The survey was conducted in response to recent international and Bangladeshi criticism on the use of violence by certain police officers to quell the anti-discrimination student movement.
Therefore, the ‘Police restructure Commission’ was established by the interim government to restructure the police force.
