NIOH appears blessings for eye patients despite bed crises

Despite a bed shortage, the National Institute of Ophthalmology and Hospital (NIOH) here offers state-of-the-art eye care, making it a blessing for underprivileged eye patients.

Around 3,000 patients receive outside treatment every day at the eye hospital in Sher-E-Bangla Nagar, where intricate eye surgeries are performed even though many patients are unable to be admitted due to bed constraints.

Of the 250 beds in the hospital, 128 are free, 88 are paid, and 34 are cabins. Patients must pay Tk 475-575 for each non-air-conditioned cabin and Tk 875-1175 for each air-conditioned cabin.

The hospital’s emergency department is open for 24 hours and the specialist doctors provide treatment to outdoor patients from 8 am to 2:30 pm everyday without government holiday. Patients can take eye treatment for a ticket with Tk 10.

According to Dr. Khair Ahmed Chowdhury, director of the NIOH, the eye hospital is renowned both domestically and internationally for its cutting-edge medical services, specialized physicians, and the newest medical technology.

According to him, patients can purchase a ticket for 10 Tk to have any kind of eye treatment or surgery performed at this institution.

In addition to having all the latest equipment for treatment and testing, this facility also offers free medications to its patients, he said.

According to Chowdhury, work is ongoing to increase the number of beds from 250 to 500. “We submitted a proposal the concerned ministry in this regard,” he stated.

He also voiced cautionary that maximum punishment will be given if any evidence of corruption is found against anyone in the hospital.

Deputy Director of the hospital Dr. Halima Sultana Haque said about 3,000 patients comes to the hospital for treatment every day from different parts of the country.

“Among them, those who require operation, are given the scheduled date for the operation. The operation is performed on the scheduled day”, she said.

She also said cent percent tests are conducted at the hospital including X-ray, blood test, urine test, ECG, CT scan and ultra sonogram.

According to administrative officer Rakibul Hasan Mishu, the hospital has twelve operating rooms because it performs seven different kinds of surgeries.

According to him, this hospital has nine departments. Cataract, Cornea, Glaucoma, Retina, Oculoplastic, Pediatric, Neuro-, and Community Ophthalmology, as well as Vision, are among them.

Phaco surgery is a new medical technique used to do cataract surgery. Patients can return home in the afternoon if the procedure is done in the morning.

About 60 folks have cataract surgery here each day. The hospital administration provides every care at no cost. Additionally, there is no charge for the medications used during operation. Additionally, free eye lenses are being distributed.

Most of the Ophthalmologists have MD, FCPS and higher degrees.

Some patients said that they get high quality treatment at the hospital as patients can avail all kinds of treatment by buying a ticket for 10 taka.

Patient Shaheen said after buying a ticket for 10 taka, his eye operation was done and lenses were also given without any extra money.

Monir Hossain came from Gazipur in the hospital for eye treatment. He said some medicines had to be bought from outside but most of the medicines were given by the hospital.

The hospital provides treatment for outdoor eye patients in eight rooms as it has separate rooms for elderly freedom fighters and autistics.
