Chattogram Port handles record 32.30 lakh TEUs container

The nation’s top seaport, Chattogram Port, has already handled more than 32.30 lakh TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containers, setting a new record for the port administration.

It previously handled the most, at 32.15 lakh TEUs in 2021. By the end of this year, the port authority anticipated that this number will have increased to almost 32.8 lakh TEUs.

In 2019, Chattogram Port gained entry into the “three million club” by managing around 30.88 lakh TEUs.
Mohd. Omar Faruk, the secretary of the Chittagong Port Authority, told BSS that this is a sign that companies have overcome the difficulties they have faced this year.

With the current rate of container handling, the port’s global ranking is expected to improve, he added.

Despite global crises and natural disasters, he said, the achievement is attributed to efficient port management, cooperation among stakeholders and growth in import-export trade.

“Global crises have started to subside, leading to a revival in trade. This has resulted in increased imports and exports, consequently boosting container handling. Additionally, various initiatives have been undertaken to streamline port operations. The cumulative effect of these factors is evident in the improved port performance,” he added.

He said the growth is a testament to the dedication of the authority, various stakeholders and everyone else involved.

Faruk said the country’s import-export activities have gained some pace this year, impacting the volume of container.

Lloyd’s List, a shipping magazine located in London, routinely ranks container handling worldwide. Chattogram Port is presently rated 67th on the 2023 list. Because of the record container throughput in 2024, port officials and users anticipate that the port’s global ranking will continue to increase.

Natural disasters, anti-government protests, a curfew in July and August, internet outages, and floods all interfered with the port’s operations during the year. Notwithstanding these obstacles, the nation’s business community is seeing the attainment of such a high degree of container handling favorably.
