Contribute to nature conservation to make planet liveable: Rizwana

Syeda Rizwana Hasan, adviser on the environment, forests, and climate change, today called on everyone to help preserve nature in order to leave a habitable planet for coming generations.

During the ‘Prokriti O Jibon Foundation – Channel i Nature Conservation Award 2023’ distribution ceremony held on the Channel i premises here this evening, she made the call.

As the chief guest, Rizwana stated that the government is collaborating with the general public to preserve the nation’s ecology and natural resources.

According to her, steps have been done to make organizations like the Water Development Board, the Forest Department, and the Department of Environment more people-focused.

 The environment adviser said everyone must consider environmental conservation as a national priority and act accordingly.

She said efforts are underway to bridge the gap between the government and the general people by addressing their concerns and ensuring their voices are heard.

Rizwana went on to say that compassion for the environment must be the driving force behind conservation initiatives.

She emphasized the significance of identifying environmental warriors and the permanent loss of species once they go extinct.

According to the adviser, steps have been taken to address the nation’s long-standing environmental problems.Restoring canals and reducing pollution are priorities, she added, adding that efforts are also being made to safeguard all rivers.

Mukit Majumder Babu, the chairman of the Prokriti O Jibon Foundation, presided over the occasion.

Dr. Abdul Hamid, Director General of the Department of Environment; Md. Amir Hosain Chowdhury, Chief Conservator of Forests; and Nayoka Martinez Beckstrom, First Secretary for Environment and Climate Change at the Embassy of Sweden, also spoke.

Dr. Md. Manoorul Kibria, a zoology professor at the University of Chittagong, received this year’s prize in recognition of his noteworthy efforts to preserve Bangladesh’s biodiversity and environment.

The adviser said that Prof. Kibria and the Halda River are inseparable, referring to Dr. Kibria’s efforts.

Environmental specialists, officials from non-governmental organizations, members of the press, and other notable visitors attended the event.
