10,58,531 workers went abroad, sent $11.13b in July-Nov

With sincere efforts by different stakeholders, especially the incumbent government, Bangladesh sent 10,58,531 workers overseas and received $ 11.13b in remittance during July-November period.

“The trend of overseas employment is satisfactory as 10,58,531 job seekers went abroad with employment from July 1 to November 30,” an official of Bangladesh Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET) told BSS today.

According to him, 78,318 women and 9,80,213 males travelled overseas for work till November 30 out of all job applicants.

The most recent data from the Bangladesh Bank shows that in November, inward remittances sent home by Bangladeshis living abroad increased 14% year over year to $2.2 billion.

Remittance earnings increased from $8.80 billion during the same period last fiscal year to $11.13 billion during the July–November period of this fiscal year.

In the first five months of current fiscal year, the amount of money sent home by Bangladeshi nationals who travelled overseas increased by 26.4% as compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year.

Speaking with Mohammad Jahirul Alam Majumder, BSS Deputy Director (ongoing charge) of BMET, he stated that for the past nine months, the inflow of remittances has significantly increased in tandem with the income of expatriates.

Even yet, he noted, a record number of remittances arrived in Bangladesh this year. Remittances from Bangladeshis living abroad totalled $2.4 billion in September 2024, after sending US$2.2 billion in November.

According to experts, expatriates have paid the nation the money they save on routine expenses and other expenses.

“We’ve been working to increase the number of overseas migrant workers as well as ensure the rights and protection of them,” the BMET officer said.

According to the World Bank’s Migration and Development Brief, released in June, migration and development briefs were produced every six months and provided updates on key developments in the area of migration and remittance flows and related policies.

Furthermore, because the need for skilled labour will grow in many nations, experts recommended that the government invest in training nurses, doctors, and other healthcare professionals.

To produce skilled job seekers, the government established numerous training facilities in various districts in addition to skill-development initiatives.

Additionally, the government promoted legal foreign work as a significant source of foreign exchange earnings.

Diplomas in shipbuilding engineering, refrigeration and air conditioning, general mechanics, electrical machine maintenance, auto CAD 2D and 3D, welding (6G), catering, mason, Korean, Arabic, canton, Japanese, and other languages were among the many trainings offered by the government.

Earlier, the government declared the overseas employment sector as a “thrust sector” with maximum stress upon further expanding job markets for the Bangladeshi job seekers abroad.

According to data in the ministry, the government has already set up many training centres in different districts along with skill development programmes to create skilful jobseekers.

The government encourages documented overseas employment, as an important component of earning foreign currency.
