Prosecutor Karim AA Khan of the International Criminal Court (ICC) has made a significant development by requesting an arrest in connection with crimes against Rohingya.
“After an extensive, independent and impartial investigation, my Office has concluded that there are reasonable grounds to believe that Senior General and Acting President Min Aung Hlaing, Commander-in-Chief of the Myanmar Defence Services, bears criminal responsibility for the crimes against humanity of deportation and persecution of the Rohingya, committed in Myanmar, and in part in Bangladesh,” he said on Wednesday while concluding his Bangladesh visit.
“Today, my Office is filing an application for a warrant of arrest before Pre-Trial Chamber I of the International Criminal Court in the Situation in Bangladesh/Myanmar.”
He is filing an application for a warrant of arrest before Pre-Trial Chamber I of the International Criminal Court in the situation in Bangladesh/Myanmar.
The prosecutor has submitted the request to the ICC judges, who will decide whether to issue the warrant. There is no set deadline for the judges’ decision.
If the warrant is issued, ICC member states will be legally obligated to arrest and transfer Min Aung Hlaing to the court if he enters their territories. The ICC does not allow trials in absentia.
To date, no one has been held accountable for the 2016-2017 crimes committed against the Rohingya.
In a visit to Kutupalong camp, Bangladesh, Karim AA Khan addressed the Rohingya community on the application for a warrant of arrest in the situation in Bangladesh/Myanmar.
