In a dramatic political comeback that shocked the world, Donald Trump defeated Kamala Harris in the US presidential election on Wednesday, winning by a wide margin.
Following one of the most antagonistic campaigns in contemporary US history, the divisive Republican’s victory was made even more noteworthy in light of his record-breaking criminal conviction, near-miss assassination attempt, and warnings from a former chief of staff that he is a “fascist.”
“It’s a political victory that our country has never seen before,” Trump told a victory party in Florida.
As fans yelled “USA!” the 78-year-old went on to say that his “magnificent” victory will “allow us to make America great again.”
World leaders quickly promised to cooperate with Trump, especially Israel and Ukraine, where the incoming president’s isolationist “America First” foreign policy might determine the outcome of burning wars.
Vice President Harris conducted a centrist campaign that emphasised Trump’s aggressive rhetoric and use of overtly racist and sexist stereotypes. Harris only entered the contest in July when President Joe Biden withdrew.
But his apocalyptic warnings about immigration and championing of isolationism found their mark with voters battered by the post-Covid economy and eager for a change from the Biden years.
The campaign predicted a close race, but the outcome came as a surprise, with a resounding success that featured victories in Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, among other swing states.
As gloom overtook her campaign, Harris cancelled a speech and shortened a scheduled watch party. Her speech is now scheduled for later on Wednesday.
