The United States (US) has promised to assist Bangladesh in returning its embezzled funds.
The promise was given by US Charge d’Affaires Helen LaFave during a goodbye visit to Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at his Tejgaon office today.
LaFave stated during the discussion that the United States was already offering Bangladesh guidance and other resources to help retrieve the funds and return them to Bangladesh.
Repatriating stolen money is difficult, but it is possible, she said.
“We will definitely make it happen,” the Chief Adviser said.
The Chief Adviser praised LaFave for her service as a top diplomat and appreciated her sincere efforts to advance Bangladesh-US relations at a crucial time.
“I am very proud to witness history,” Helen LaFave said as she recounted her memories during the student-led mass uprising in July-August.
Professor Yunus received a letter from Secretary of State Antony Blinken from the US Charge d’Affaires.
Prof. Yunus was informed by the acting US envoy that the US was moving quickly to relocate the Rohingyas from the camp in Bangladesh to the country in North America.
Civil bureaucracy reforms, labour difficulties, efforts to return tens of billions of dollars stolen from Bangladesh under the dictatorship, counterterrorism, judicial reforms, and South Asian electrical connectivity were also discussed.
According to Prof. Yunus, his administration was likewise dedicated to implementing comprehensive labour reforms.
In an attempt to strengthen relations between the two friendly countries, the US envoy announced that several high-ranking US officials would travel to Bangladesh in the coming months.
