Bangladesh deposits instrument of ratification of BBNJ agreement

Bangladesh has submitted an instrument of ratification to the UN for the BBNJ Agreement, which is governed by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and addresses the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity in areas outside of national jurisdiction.

According to a news release from the foreign ministry issued this morning, Md. Touhid Hossain, the adviser on foreign affairs, placed the instrument at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) High Level Treaty Event in New York on Thursday.

“This ratification underscores Bangladesh’s unwavering commitment to international cooperation and regulatory initiatives in marine affairs,” the announcement stated.

Bangladesh is committed to the universal and efficient implementation of the BBNJ Agreement and hopes to facilitate its quick entrance into force as an early ratifier, it stated.

Bangladesh has now ratified this important agreement, joining the ranks of the pioneering countries that have done so, according to the foreign ministry, with the submission of the ratification instrument.

On June 19, 2023, the UN adopted the BBNJ Agreement by consensus, marking a significant development in the management of the global commons.

The objective is to fortify the global legal structure concerning the preservation and sustainable utilization of marine biological variety in maritime domains that fall outside of state borders.

Transparent environmental impact assessments are emphasized in the agreement, and developing nations’ capacity-building initiatives are supported, guaranteeing fair involvement in the sustainable management of ocean resources.

After 60 Member States have deposited their instruments of ratification, approval, acceptance, or accession, the BBNJ Agreement will come into effect 120 days later.
