Giorgia Meloni, the prime minister of Italy, urged Bangladesh to start “a new page” in the diplomatic ties between Rome and Dhaka, stating that Bangladesh is a friend of Italy.
The appeal was made by the Italian premier during her meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday (local time) at the UN headquarters in New York, which was held in conjunction with the annual session of the UN General Assembly.
Prof. Yunus provided a brief overview of the student-led nationwide movement during the conference, stating that it has opened up new chances for Bangladesh and acted as “the reset button” for the country as a whole.
Meloni said Italy would support the Prof Yunus-led interim government in its move to carry out vital reforms in key sectors.
“Absolutely, you can count on us,” she said.
“Let’s try to open a new page in our relationship,” she added.
In order to reduce hazardous illicit migration, the Chief Adviser encouraged the Italian leader to formalize migration from Bangladesh, opening the door for additional Bangladeshi workers to enter Italy through legal means.
Meloni concurred, stating that both countries had to cooperate in order to halt irregular migration and provide training to individuals who intend to work in Italy.
Attending the meeting were chief of protocol Khandaker Masudul Alam, senior secretary Lamiya Morshed, and consultant on energy and power Fouzul Kabir Khan.
