Home adviser asks police to be truly people friendly

Lt. Gen. (Retd) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Home Advisor, advised police officers to be truly personable today.

“Police must truly be approachable to the public. After leaving this morning’s view-exchange meeting with Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) officials at their headquarters here, he declared, “There is no chance to remain in black and white anymore.”

Everyone wants police to be a force of the people, according to the home adviser.

“The citizens anticipate that cops will be approachable. As journalists, you and I also anticipate this,” he remarked.

The home adviser requested that the police strive to restore their former grandeur by carrying out their jobs with sincerity and raising morale.

As you (journalists) are aware, the police suffered significant losses (during the popular uprising). Hence, challenges might be seen throughout various phases of their works. After they were psychologically inspired, I have asked them to resurrect their former greatness,” he declared.

Along with giving the police instructions, he also gave them instructions on how to solve traffic-related issues, stop extortion, corruption, and harassment of the public, as well as give prompt services to the people.

He brought up the fact that individuals are visiting police stations with a variety of issues, and he urged the officers to listen to them patiently and try to find solutions.

The home advisor also gave the police instructions to figure out how to solve traffic-related issues.

He also requested that the police put an end to extortion.

“If the extortion can be contained, the price of the commodities would be brought to tolerable level,” he said.

Since corruption and bribery have permeated every aspect of life, he gave the police orders to put an end to them.

The home advisor stated that the police do not file cases in random cases.

He claimed that normal people are filing these cases, urging them to make complaints against the actual culprits so that no innocent person is harassed.

He went on to say that conducting investigations would take a long time.

He claimed that in the past, police had filed charges in which they named ten people and several hundred unnamed people.

But, he added, cops are no longer reporting these kinds of crimes.

Once more, the home advisor guaranteed that no one would be detained without a warrant.

“I have asked the DB (Detective Branch of police) not to arrest any innocent people rather to nab only the criminals,” he stated.

In response to another query concerning mob justice, he urged everyone to refrain from enforcing the law on their own and brought up a recent incident that occurred at Jahangirnagar University.

“There is no scope to take law in own hands,” warned him.

At the viewpoint exchange meeting were Md. Mainul Hassan, Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), and Inspector General of Police (IGP), Md. Mainul Islam.
