ICT to be reconstituted soon: chief prosecutor

Chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), Md Tajul Islam, announced today that the tribunal will soon be reformed.

“The reconstitution might happen within the next week. In this regard, last week, I met with the law adviser,” he said to BSS.

“The prosecution is not being able to get many necessary orders from the tribunal unless it is reconstituted. The adviser has assured me. The trial process will start formally after the reconstitution of the tribunal,” he added.

The chief prosecutor went on to say that letters are being sent to all media outlets, public and private hospitals, civil surgeon offices, deputy commissioners, superintendents of police, and other relevant parties in an attempt to gather information and proof of genocides that may have been carried out in July and August allegedly on orders from the previous Awami League government.

He mentioned that in order to gather proof of crimes against humanity and genocides, ICT teams are also visiting hospitals. He called on everyone who knew anything about this to come forward.

As of right now, the tribunal is without judges because its previous chairman, Abu Ahmed Jamadar, retired on July 13 and another judge was returned to the High Court.
