Landslides in Cox’s Bazar claim six lives

Early today saw the deaths of at least six persons, including three Rohingyas, in two different landslides in the district’s Sadar upazila and at a Rohingya camp in Ukhiya upazila.

In the district of Sadar upazila, three family members perished in the South Dikkul region under Jhilongja union, while three more family members perished in the Hatikumrul-14 Rohingya camp in Ukhiya upazila.

The individual occurrences happened early this morning and late on Thursday night.

The former chairman of the Jhilongja Union Parishad, Giyas Uddin Zhiku, claimed that during a night of intense rain, they heard the sound of a landslide coming from Mizan’s residence. When they returned later, they discovered Mizan’s family had been buried beneath the avalanche. Mizan was saved alive right away around three in the morning. The bodies were later removed from the area with assistance from the locals.

The deceased were identified as 21-year-old Akhi Moni, Mizanur Rahman’s wife, and their two children, 1-year-old Latifa Islam and 5-year-old Miha Jinnat.

Nilufa Yasmin Chowdhury, a Cox’s Bazar Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), visited the impacted region and gave the victim’s family cash of Taka 75,000.

Meanwhile, Additional Commissioner of Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commission Mohammad Samsud Douza Nayan said, due to continuous heavy rains, three residential houses were destroyed by a landslide in Hakim Para Rohingya Camp No. 14 in Ukhiya upazila and three brothers of the same family died due to soil pressure.

These are the sons of Kabir Ahmed from the E-2 block of the camp, Abdur Rahim, Abdul Hafeez, and Abdul Waheed.

Abdul Hannan, an associate meteorologist with the Cox’s Bazar Meteorological Office, reported that 401 mm of rain fell in 27 hours, from 6 a.m. on Thursday to 9 a.m. on Friday. This season’s maximum amount of rain to be recorded in a single day is this one.
